Digs

FOAA volunteers have helped out on digs throughout Alexandria, including Old Town, Shuter's Hill (behind the George Washington Masonic National Memorial), and Fort Ward Park. After attending a field orientation, you can take part in "digging season," generally spring through fall, with many weekend opportunities.

Family Dig Days are open to adults and children, and are a great way to introduce kids to the wonders of archaeological discovery.

Lab Work

Volunteers are also indispensable in lab work at the museum in Old Town. They help the archaeological staff to wash, mark, photograph and catalogue artifacts, and they may occasionally assist with other areas of collections management.
